Not Enough Actual Legislating: Members spend too much time on other matters

Why? They work on minor matters that are popular and visible rather than working on the weighty issues that could affect the future of our country. They also pander to the media.

Why do the members work on minor matters and with the media?

They want to get reelected, and they are willing to neglect their legislative duties to do so. In 2010, Congress worked only 53% of the full days available, and of course, members may be absent even on work days. Root causes are careerism and short-term thinking.

Why? They spend an enormous amount of time campaigning and raising campaign money.
